The new production hall of Höhne GmbH in Kaltenkirchen shows that modern and user-oriented industrial architecture can also have design quality. Architect Iris Thyroff-Krause used steel sandwich panels from Fischer Profil, with an external face of Colorcoat Prisma®, to create a building hall worth seeing in harmonious silver-grey shades.
Höhne GmbH is one of the leading European suppliers on the market for cable connection technology and casting compounds, especially in the field of energy supply. The old location in Pinne-berg had become too small, so that it was decided to move to the industrial park Westerwohld-Nord in Kaltenkirchen, north of Hamburg. The new production building with a central warehouse and a two-storey office wing was built in the immediate vicinity of the A7 freeway.
The approximately 11,200 square metre property is designed to be adaptable with an option for future expansion. The production hall and warehouse have a total area of around 5,000 square metres. It is divided into 2,400 square metres of production space, approx. 2,200 square metres of storage space and approx. 550 square metres of office space. The goods are mainly produced in the northern section of the building, finished, packed and loaded directly onto trucks or stored temporarily. A firewall separates the central warehouse from the production facility. In the north end, employees and visitors reach the upper floor of the building via an external staircase. The two-storey office wing with the technical rooms is in front of the production hall.
The hall itself consists of a supporting structure made of concrete with laminated wood beams. The external skin was clad with FischerTHERM® plus ML 100 sandwich panels. The roof was covered with FischerTRAPEZ® 165/250 trapezoidal profiles, a layer of thermal insulation and a final foil sealing. The office building was constructed as a timber frame structure in passive house standard with wall elements of the FischerTHERM® plus ML 120. The required U-value here is 0.22 W/(m²K).
The FischerTHERM® sandwich panels consist of two cover layers of Colorcoat® pre-finished steel and an intermediate core of CFC- and HCFC-free rigid polyurethane foam. These façade elements are light and at the same time have a very high rigidity, which allows large spans to be achieved. The panels have an excellent thermal insulation value and could be easily and quickly installed by Gebr. Schütt KG.
The 1m wide, and up to 11m long secret fix wall panels, with the unique DUO seal for high joint tightness, were attached to the concrete columns. FischerTHERM® panel types plus ML 100 and plus ML 120 were used, laid in accordance with the color concept developed by the architect at the request of the client in the colors Sirius, Alaska Grey and Slate Grey.
Whether it is a storm, hail or fire, a building is exposed to many dangers throughout its life. It is therefore important to be able to trust that roof and wall elements can withstand such forces of nature.
Sophisticated industrial architecture has the task of bringing together all building physics requirements with the aesthetic wishes of the architects and the economic conditions of the client.
